Not all washers or detergents can do a great job of removing odors like urine from your clothes. But there are some additional steps that we can take to help get the smell out.
1. Use Bleach to Remove Urine Smell From Clothes
Using bleach can be a great way to remove the urine smell from clothes. Before you use bleach, make sure it is color safe for your colored clothing.
We recommend using a bucket large enough to fit both your clothes and the bleach. Start by filling up the bucket 1/3 of the way with the bleach. You are then going to take your clothes and slowly submerge them in the bleach. Make sure the clothes are fully covered and drenched and we can leave them in the bleach overnight or for about 6 hours.
Once you have left them soaking in the bucket for some time, you can now remove them and place them into a washer for cleaning. Use your favorite detergent here and let the washer do its thing. Once it is ready to be dried toss in a dryer sheet to give it a great scent after.
2. Use Vinegar to Remove Urine Smell From Clothes
A natural method of removing urine smell from your clothes would be to use white vinegar. Vinegar has the ability to fight off harsh smells.
If your clothes have not been covered in urine for a very long time, then we recommend just placing the clothes in your washer adding vinegar, and mixing in your favorite detergent. This will help in removing the odor.
If your clothes have been covered in urine for more than a day, we recommend the same method as bleach and that is to soak them in vinegar overnight. For some added help, you can also mix in a small amount of baking soda, but be careful as the reaction between vinegar and baking soda can cause the vinegar to spill. If you do add baking soda, we recommend running the cloths through water in the sink just to get the baking soda off the clothes before entering the wash. Once ready, you can place it in the washer, and add your detergent and a little extra vinegar just for some added help.
3. Use Zero Odor to Remove Urine Smell From Clothes
Our final recommendation is to use a laundry odor eliminator called Zero Odor. It is a non-toxic substance that is created to fight odor-causing molecules. This can be used for urine and many other different odors that can get trapped on your clothes.
It is very easy to use. You will just add it to your washer as you would any detergent. Give your clothes a good wash and it will help remove the odor.
Leave Certain Fabrics to The Pros
We don’t recommend you do this with all of your clothes. There are certain fabrics, like polyester that will be a pain to remove the odor. Or you might have a very expensive dress or suit that you won’t feel comfortable just adding bleach to. In this type of case, we recommend that you find a local dry cleaner and take your clothes to them. Explain the odors so they know what they are working with and they will also do a great job getting that smell out.
