How to Get Rid of Onion Breath

So many of our recipes call for onions as an ingredient. But the odor it leaves in our mouths tends to make us not want to consume it. The odor is caused from sulfur compounds that are found in onions. Eating them in a meal or specially in raw form can cause sulfur bacteria to build in your mouth.

Do not worry, there are multiple ways we can remove or minimize the smell so others don’t notice. Here are some of the top methods of removing onion breath from your mouth.

Brush Your Teeth

Brushing and flossing your teeth can be seen as the most obvious, but you would be surprised how many of us don’t do it. Use a mint flavored toothpaste to give you a fresh mouth.

If you are not at home and don’t want to carry around your toothbrush and toothpaste, you can always purchase a portable toothbrush. These are great for individuals on the go as they are small and easy to conceal.

Tongue Scraper

A tongue scraper can also help remove bacteria buildup on the back of your tongue where a toothbrush can’t help. With the tongue scraper, start at the back of your tongue and slowly scrape forward. Do this a couple of times and then rinse out your mouth.

Mouthwash

Mouthwash is another good method of removing bad onion breath. They help remove bacteria that produces sulfur like onions which cause bad breath. Our favorite mouthwash that we use currently is TheraBreath.

Drink Water

Drinking water while eating and after can help remove onion smell from your mouth. The water will help wash away and small amounts of onions that can get stuck between your teeth causing onion breath.

Adding lemon to your water will add a little extra support. The acids in the lemon contain antibacterial properties which can help rid of onion breath.

Fresh Fruits & Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables like apples, carrots, pears, and celery all produce a saliva which helps fight the odor causing bacteria. Eating them with or after your meal can help in reduce the smell of onions in your mouth. They are also rich in fiber making them act as a natural toothbrush.

Eat Parsley & Mint Leaves

Eating mint and parsley will also help destroy onion breath. Both can help fight the sulfur from your mouth that is causing the bad breath. Mint also has the minty freshness smell.

Green Tea

Having a cup of green tea with your meal or after will also help eliminate onion breath. It has natural deodorizing properties that temporarily fight the odor. Drinking a green tea with mint will help add an extra layer of support.

Gum

Chewing mint or peppermint flavored gums will help hide the onion odor temporarily. You can also look for chewing gums that help fight the bacteria like TheraBreath. Chew the gum right after your meal or a few seconds before you are going to interact with someone.

Essential Oils

Essential oils such as Tea Tree oil, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, and Myrrh can help fight sulfur from onions that cause bad breath. They possess anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial properties that will help keep your breath fresh from onion odor.

Fight Bacteria in Your Mouth

While there are temporary methods of removing onion breath, you should maintain a routine of ridding your mouth from bad bacteria. Making sure you are brushing your teeth at least twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Flossing your teeth and also scrapping your tongue also helps rid of the bad bacteria that causes bad breath. following proper hygiene steps can go a long way to prevent bad breath as well.
