Foxes’ urine, feces and body odor give off a strong, unpleasant scent that alerts other animals to stay away. Interestingly enough though, foxes smell like the animals they prey on (such as rabbits and squirrels) to help them blend in with their surroundings! Sometimes humans can experience panic-like symptoms of smelling this bad odor. The reaction is more common if someone has already been exposed to an animal’s stinky scent before their first direct contact with a fox- more than likely at some point within childhood or at least before puberty. Remember that there are no actual fox smells out there! Just we humans creating images we think we should be seeing and smelling based upon what we know to be a fox.
